- Youth Mindfulness 2018 Summer Retreat -

The Youth Mindfulness 5 day Summer retreat is happening at Wiston Lodge, South Lanarkshire from 30th July 2018 to 3rd August. Join us for an immersive and inspiring experience! 

Our summer retreat is an opportunity to come together as a community to nourish our practice of mindfulness and cultivate our capacities for joy, ease and compassion.

The retreat will be held at the beautiful Wiston Lodge in South Lanarkshire. Over the course of an inspiring 5 days, we will have time for formal meditation practices, to share from the heart and listen deeply, while also enjoying the opportunity to be close to nature, to relax and restore ourselves.

The first three days of the retreat (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), will focus on nourishing our personal practice of mindfulness, while on the fourth day we will explore the question of how to share mindfulness with others. On the fifth day, we’ll explore what inspiration we can carry forward into our lives.

If you’ve been on our Kids Programme Teacher Training, our Summer Retreat offers a great opportunity to connect with other educators bringing mindfulness to young people, to learn from what’s working for them and how they’re growing mindfulness in their context. On the fourth day we’ll have a dedicated workshop exploring how to share mindfulness with young people.

Graduate of our One Year Programme?

If you’ve completed our One Year Programme, our Summer Retreat offers a great opportunity to connect with other graduates and share the experience of teaching mindfulness to adults. On the fourth day we’ll have a dedicated workshop exploring the work of sharing mindfulness with adults.

Not completed any of our Programmes / Not interested in teaching mindfulness?

If you’ve not completed any of our programmes, are not interested in teaching mindfulness to others, or are new to mindfulness, that’s OK! This retreat will be open to all levels of experience. During our teaching workshops, there will be alternative options to attend such as guided deep relaxations and workshops on integrating mindfulness practice.

What we’ll experience on the retreat:

Deep Relaxation
Deep relaxation is a practice of learning to release tensions in the body and to nourish the body with feelings of ease, peace and joy. In this practice, we normally lie down so as to give the body the opportunity to rest deeply.

Talks / Workshops
Each day we will have the opportunity to listen to a talk/workshop to inspire our practice. The talk is offered to encourage our practice mindfulness, to aid our process of self-inquiry and to provide guidance on how we can cultivate our capacities for wisdom and compassion.

Circle Sharing
Circle sharing is a collective practice of mindful communication. It involves sitting in a circle with a small group of other practitioners and sharing what is alive in our experience from our heart and listening to others with non-judgment and compassion. This practice offers a space to be with others. It can be healing, inspiring, and heart-warming.
Youth Mindfulness
At least once a day on the retreat, we will have an opportunity to be in touch with the present moment through the practice of sitting meditation. This gives us the chance to bring our mind home to our body, to bring awareness to our experience and to relate with kindness and love. Walking meditation offers the opportunity to bring awareness to movement. In walking meditation we can learn the art of non-striving and being in touch with the beautiful and nourishing elements of nature.

Silence gives us the opportunity to move into deeper quiet and stillness and connect more deeply with ourselves and what is happening in our experience. While sometimes strange at first, it can be very rewarding.

Free Time
In addition, to the scheduled activities outlined above, there will be time for doing nothing. This is an extremely important part of the retreat. So often we fill our time with incessant doing. When there is space and time on the retreat with nothing to do, it can be an opportunity to move into the being mode – connecting with others, with nature and ourselves.

Michael Schwammberger

Trainer, England Programme

Michael is an internationally sought after meditation teacher regularly running retreats in the UK, France and Spain. In 1995 he managed the Gaia House retreat centre and in 1997 became a monk and student of Thich Nhat Hanh. He traveled extensively with Thich Nhat Hanh and became abbot of Son Ha Temple in 2005. After 13 years leading the monastic life he disrobed in 2012 and now leads retreats internationally.

Michael Bready

Trainer, Scotland Programme

Michael is the founder of Youth Mindfulness and has taught mindfulness in schools, prisons, workplaces and community settings for over 7 years. He has trained more than 500 educators to teach the Youth Mindfulness Kids Programme who have in turn gone on to share teach more than 25,000 young people.

Dr. Lyndsay Lunan

Trainer, Scotland & England Programmes

Lyndsay went on her first retreat in 1998 and has been practising mindfulness ever since, drawing inspiration from various teachers and traditions. She is the author of an HMIE awarded mindfulness curriculum for teens and delivers mindfulness courses for both young adults in Further Education as well as offering CPD courses and workshops to staff.

Lorna Walker

Creative Director

Lorna recently joined the Youth Mindfulness team in a full-time capacity as Creative Director. Prior to this, Lorna taught for ten years in provisions for young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. She has been practicing mindfulness for over 10 years, and has taught mindfulness to 1,000s of children and adults.

Retreat Details

Dates and Times
The retreat will start with registration at 4pm on Monday 30th July 2018. It will end at 11am on Friday 3rd August after breakfast and morning practice. We gently urge you to make sure you can benefit from the full experience of the retreat by attending for the entire duration.

Accommodation at Wiston lodge is arranged in dormitory style rooms. The option to camp on the beautiful grounds is also available.

Location and Transport
Wiston Lodge is a 19th century former hunting lodge, now a centre for Outdoor Education. The lodge is set in beautiful woodland which will provide us with some beautiful spaces for walking meditation.

Wiston Lodge is an hour’s drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh. Alternatively there are buses from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Millrig Road, which is a 20 minute walk to the lodge.

Get a bus from Glasgow direct to the venue.

If you are in need of transport you can book a spot on our specially arranged bus to transport retreat participants from Glasgow to Wiston Lodge and back. The bus will leave at 4pm from the centre of Glasgow on the 30th of July and travel straight to Wiston. It will then take passengers back to the centre of Glasgow leaving Wiston at 11.30am on the 3rd of August.

Tickets for the return bus journey are £45 and must be booked 3 weeks in advance of the beginning of the retreat.


Absolutely! This retreat is open and accessible to all regardless of experience.
There are no single rooms available, only dormitory, we recommend camping if you would prefer a little more privacy.
We strongly encourage you to leave all internet devices to the side whilst on retreat. If you do need to use the internet urgently it is available in the lodge.
