What is the Youth Mindfulness Kids Programme?

The Youth Mindfulness Kids Programme consists of 16 one-hour lessons for 7-11 year olds, designed to be delivered over 8 weeks. Each lesson is packed full of inspiring videos, games, and kinaesthetic activities, bringing mindfulness to life in a way that is fun, relevant and engaging.

Each lesson includes mindful sitting, lying and movement practices as well as compassionate enquiry – a powerful way of exploring experience in classroom discussion.

The Youth Mindfulness Kids Programme is an in-depth foundation in mindfulness enabling children to activate their inner potential.

The themes of the curriculum

The programme comprises several themes which build on each other sequentially, with the first six lessons focusing on developing the foundations of mindfulness: embodied, present-moment awareness.

After this, the children explore how mindfulness can help them be happier by being present for the good things in life, and also help them be more resilient and cope with stress and difficulty, particularly difficult thoughts and emotions.

We then then focus on the cultivation of kindness: first to ourselves and then towards others. Finally the children explore questions of purpose and agency: How do I want to be in the world? How do I want to act?

Our Kids Programme was featured in the All-Party Parliamentary Group Report: Mindful Nation UK, and is recognised as one of the UK’s leading mindfulness programmes for children.

What’s the research?

In a study with the University of Edinburgh, looking at the impact of the Youth Mindfulness Kids Programme on 9 and 10 year olds, the study found that:

Of children reported benefits to their emotional wellbeing, or ability to focus and pay attention.

Of children reported being able to handle strong emotions better.

Reported improvements in peer and family relationships.

Said they were less aggressive, and engaged less in confrontation.

Said that mindfulness helps them focus, pay attention and concentrate.

More than half said mindfulness helps them enjoy life more and feel happier.

In order to participate in the Youth Mindfulness Kids Programme Teacher Training it is essential that you have a regular ongoing mindfulness practice of at least 6 months and have completed an 8-week mindfulness course or equivalent training or retreats. This is because in order to teach the Youth Mindfulness Kids Programme, it is essential that the educator embodies mindfulness in the classroom, and that the communication of the key concepts and practices are grounded in the educators own experience of mindfulness.
